They did not change it because they were afraid that this movie was going to get ban in China! After the MGM went into financial shit the production had to look for other financial backers and no one want to finance a film because they may run into problems with other future blockbusters if they offend the Chinese by backing this film. They don't care if this film get ban, they just don't want to offend China.
