A look at the hydraulic pitman drive on the m/v JONATHAN PADELFORD on the Upper Mississippi River. The propulsion of this vessel is based on the American steam sternwheelers: reciprocating steam engines driving a paddlewheel mounted on the stern. However, this is the modern equivalent, with the steam engines replaced with hydraulic rams and an ingenious valve linkage system. The characteristic sound of the steam engine is still there.
