This is me changing my g-button myself (first time, too!!!). Absolutely no pain! I hope this helps settle some fears that kids/parents may have about changing the tube.

All we used was some KY Jelly to lubricate the site. DO NOT USE PETROLEUM JELLY. Use a water-based gel. It's not required, but I thought it would make it a bit easier. It was not difficult at all. I also did this when my stomach was empty to minimize leakage.

I'm 18, and like I said, I did it with no assistance. I used distilled water to fill the balloon. It is recommended that we use distilled or sterile water. The procedure itself does not need to be sterile, since it is being placed into the abdominal cavity.

  • Is it really that easy ?

Im fifteen and might be getting a PEG soon, then hopefully a MicKey, but most people i have spoke to say it really hurts ?

  • Hi Vicky!

    how did your procedure go?

I'm sorry that I didn't see this comment sooner. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer.

The KY Jelly really made it easier... it didn't stick or anything, and also not having a lot of time in between tubes made it easy too.

  • i am getting my g tube in 3 days i am 16

  • You will probably be getting a PEG tube for a few months before you get your mic-key button. The PEG tube is a real pain in the butt, but you have to have it so that the site will heal properly. Good Luck!

  • @disneymisc honestly I think it is just plastic.

in my opinon when my g-tube gets changed it hurts a little but just remember to breath and relax.

um at first i was alittle selfconicous at first but then I got over it.

i would advise you to change your tube on a empty stomach so you dont get squirted with watever you ate.

  • wow you are brave i wouldnt be able to change out my own g-tube!!! I get my mom to change mine out...

my name is celest powell and I am seventeen with Cystic Fibrosis

  • Hi

I've had a stomach tube all my life.

And I currently have a foley cather tube for a G-Tube.

And I'm allergic to Silicone tubes.

So I was wondering if you could maybe tell me what it's like to have a Button?

Like how long can you go without haveing to change it ?

Does it hurt or pull when you take the old one out? Or does it just feel funny?

And is it made out of silicone or is it just plastic?

  • Hi Lauren :)

I havent had it yet :S i have to have another operation 1st. Which is on the 17th June.

Then if that doesnt help, they will be fitting the PEG.

thanks for you help though :D

    love vicky xx
