  • the engine seems to have a miss and some what of a surge... could just be carburetor related... might be valve related though.

  • @4freespeech Your wright on about Ultramatic transmission's the 55 clipper I had cost me on that Ultramatic the thrust washers wore out and the impellers on the converter were ground to bits .But I would take another one in a second . The girlfriend wants a convertible packard . I told her to start saving and start selling stuff to get the money .

  • Wait where's the speedometer? Is it the one on the left? I thought it was the tach but it must be the speed since I don't see it anywhere else?

  • @4freespeech

Aww, don't knock the Ultramatics, I'm sure they tried! Then again...

  • Packard had 2 straight 8s, a 327 and a 356. For some unknown reason

unlike most other car companies the Packard retired the 356, (which had

more power) around 1950 and went with the lesser 327, (150 HP).

Packard also came up with a HORRIBLE early automatic transmission

called the "Ultramatic". It had 2 speeds, low and direct drive, ("H" on the

shift quadrant). When it worked it was smooth but the direct drive clutch

was weak and wore out quickly. This engine sounds awful. Packards

    PURR.

  • 22nd Series (prod. Sept '48-ca. May '49, IIRC) Deluxe model. The guy with diffnt (oval) taillights has a 23rd series (later '49) instead. The bathtub ("pregnant elephant") styling is looked down upon today by purists, as the beginning of the end for Packard, but it was of its time and well in-line with Hudson, Nash, and a couple of other makes' offerings. I had a beige sedan like this from 2000-2002, with 76K mi. on it; restored it about 40%, then donated to charity when moved to a new house.

  • my step mammy had one for a while

  • Great documentation of this 1948. Especially enjoyed the trunk shot. Not many of those. Would like to see the trunk side of the rear lights and a bit more of the wiring where possible. Rolling down the windows would be fun, too. Yeah, I'm a glutton for the details. Thanks a bunch!

  • looks like straight 8

  • I hate to say it, but this isn't a Clipper, they stopped using the name Clipper in 1948 until 1953. Very nice car though!
