Nice pointers geared toward someone just starting out to commute by bike. I second the sentiment about cable locks: they are very easy to cut. I would use the cable lock only if I'm going into a store for a minute or two at most and if I can see my bike through the store window. I use a heavy duty U-lock as my primary lock, and a good quality cable lock as a secondary lock, to secure the wheels to the frame.

Go with a heavy chain 1/4 inch links about three and a half feet long with a section of inner tube around it to keep from scratching your finish. and one of those round locks. with two links locked in it its very hard for a bolt cutter to get a bite on the shackle.

Replace that cable with a heavy chain with padlock, and you're good to go.

@LORDMCHUGH It all depends on the quality that you want. Oh and coincidentally, I recently did pay 4 grand on a vacation recently. Of which I took my bike along with me.
I just had to try out those California mountain roads. :)

Heh heh bicycle rack....
i take my bike up the freakin elevator straight inside the office. Like I'm going to leave a 4 grand carbon bike outside on a bike rack. Riiiiiiiiiight!

@cyclenut i second that

I am a car-free bike commuter. Biking is much faster than a car.. Not in travel time, but when you add all the hours working to pay for the car and upkeep and gas and insurance and doctor bills (no exercise = sick time) and buying new clothes as you put on weight.... bicycles are much faster than the fastest car...
For me, it's not about time, it is about quality of life that only bike commuters know..

do not use cable locks use u lock , cable locks are easy to cut even i could cut one
so get a u lock it is a little more price but good

QR wheels are not very needed on a city bike, get rid of them! One less prob!

Bring along one of these BikeGlow lights also. Light, they can stay on the bike always, and be there if you're out past late.
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT lock your bike with a cable lock as this woman recommends. Not unless you want someone to easily cut it and not only steal your front wheel but your entire bike. Use a U-lock.
