Just because people have this ancient astronauts thought in their mind, doesn't mean the Dogû represent ancient astronauts. If you expect a ball to be round, doesn't mean every round object is a ball. This is a very non-academic point of view. I don't say it's a wrong view, it just needs deeper research, regardless of the outcome and what people expect to be the outcome. The Jômon era was an interesting era, but we don't know far enough to jump to such conclusions.

There is a video at youtube.com about 'unearthed' exhibition (Norwich, June-August, 2010) that includes Dogu figurines together with Balkan prehistoric figurines. See 'unearthed" (Vodcast)

I just saw them on display at the Brittish museum yesterday. I was totally amazed. Such craftmanship, and sense of form, and imagination. I felt really connected to people living 10.000 years ago :)

yes!!! Clearly all these figurines are representing alien astronauts.
There's NO WAY these CWAZY!! shapes could have been thought up by mere men.
There can be no other explaination.

Looks more like a stylized fertility figure to me.

Erich von Daniken really spoiled the whole subject of ancient astronauts. Permanently. It used to be at least a fairly serious topic of debate (Carl Sagan certainly thought so in the mid-'60s)...now it's a joke. Are all these figurines supposed to represent space travelers, or just the really odd-looking ones? Because a number of them are quite obviously female fertility figures.
As I said...impossible to take seriously. Von Daniken did a lot of damage.
