I was using the expression because it's stood the test of time... donkeys have actually made a massive contribution to winning many wars, and they're lovely (albeit stubborn) animals.

I'm Franco-Scottish and I have friends and family in Her Britannic Majesty's Armed Forces, as well as one of my relatives buried in the North of France (he was unlucky enough to die a couple of weeks before the armistice in WWI). Hence my personal anger at the way the wars are being mismanaged.
