Civil unions do NOT offer the same benefits as marriage. That's the point. And your personal choices need not restrict anyone else who DO want to get married.

First of all, I'm not even Christian, and if someone came up to me and told me I wasn't allowed to get married and offered me a proposal that gives me the same benefits as marriage, I would take it. Whether I'm married or not, it's not going to affect how much I love my partner
