Madison lets you have 4 hens but no roosters. I picked up my 3 pullets from the Sunnyside Hatchery in Beaver Dam yesterday. One laid an egg in the car on the ride home!

  • Spot,

I suppose that you could exercise your right as a citizen of free republic to bribe the township government to change the rules. In truth there are a bunch of Mad Ctiy Chicken people who have helped others in less fowl-tolerant townships to get the laws changed. Here in Madison you're allowed to have 4 chickens but no roosters; the coop has to be at least 25 feet from a dwelling, and slaughtering is verboten.

ps Google Mad City Chic Chat for the message board site.

  • I suppose that the best reply would be illegally. You could probably hide them in a garage or something, but they sometimes squawk prettly loudly at, um, about 5:30 am, so the neighbors might eventually catch on. I bribe my neighbors with eggs, by the way, which pays for their silence quite nicely.

  • Our Township will not allow backyard poultry, even though they reduce pests such as ticks and mosquitos. So how could I raise chickens in my backyard?

  • Hey! These look like great Mad City Chickens!
