Mama Hurley's face is basically the face I get every time I try to explain LOST to people. It also expresses what millions of LOST viewers are thinking right now about season 5.
@amorinternacional1 As explained, "this place was created by us". How was this mystical spirit world created by them? Through their collective conscious. There's a whole lot going on beneath the surface, and I think you may be hung up on the term 'allegory'. It doesn't mean fake story or bible-like story, and it doesn't mean there has to be an equivalent for everything (ie Animal Farm), It simply means extended metaphor. Many aspects of Lost is told through extended metaphor
@amorinternacional1 Thirdly, the fact alone that you see it as a sort of purgatory or heaven is basis alone that there is a spiritual connection between these people. Its the perfect example of how Lost uses an allegorical framework. You think this intermediate place of existence is real? It's a metaphor. Damon and Carlton simply use the FS as an artistic yet tangible means to illustrate their ideas about human connectedness — what these people meant to one another.
@amorinternacional1 First off, the average television viewer is stupid and doesn't go further into the mythology or references than what's on the surface. Go watch Across The Sea, and pay attention to the description of the Light. Secondly, who says that because it's an allegory nothing is real? Everything DID in fact happen; this just makes it a more powerful allegory.
@amorinternacional1 Secondly, although it is not an ALLEGORY for the collective unconsciousness, there surely are references to the collective unconsciousness in the show.. I normally would not comment on something like that, but since you seem to be preaching it as some sort of truth, let me say a few words with regards to it:
There is no spiritual connection between all living things. No one ever said it was "futile" to understand things through scientific means. We have no "place".
@hellswinter First off, in NO popular interpretations of the show, wether by critics or fans, is it an allegory for what you are describing.. The popular interpretation by critics and fans alike is that everything that happened on the island DID in fact happen, and that the final season, where they show an alternate reality, is some sort of pergatory or heaven after they die on the island.. Check it out on google..
@amorinternacional1 Collective consciousness; the sub-personal/super human spiritual connection between all living beings; conscience — the 'light' within us; the futility of attempting to scientifically understand human potential, the perception of time, our place in the world, etc.. And, of course, some shit is simply done to make it entertaining and exciting.
@hellswinter If it is an allegory, I'd like to know what for.. Because it just seems like the writers threw in a bunch of crazy ideas.. Genetically altered polar bears, smoke monsters, dharma scientific experiments, others, magic number sequences, everyone showing up in everyone's past, time traveling, visions.. wtf is it an allegory for?
This is a joke. It sounds ridiculous and crazy, becuase Hurley's talking to someone who has not seen for herself what the island can do. Lost is highly allegorical, and it uses *ridiculous* and *crazy* plot directions in order to support the allegory.
