Redstone used to be predictable, so you could optimize your circuits in a thoughtful manner. There were some things that were not very intuitive, though still logical in some way, so you could use it to your advantage.
1.5 introduced randomness to redstone. There are so many little update quirks and small glitches that optimization has become more of trying random things out. There is no way to predict in what order your circuits will update, so it's never safe to work with tight timings.
Pistons are random, and I'm fine with not using them. But repeaters? Come on dude... -.-
