Simple speed control (open loop) of an appliance universal motor based on MSP430 MCU. Triac driving an inductive load. Emphasis on current - voltage phase lag. Correction: In the time 1:09, replace word "llductive" for "inductive".

  • I like it. Is it a common driving scheme used in domestic appliances (lets say in handheld blender)?

  • Yes, provided it is not cordless (battery operated). The video shows a cake mixer engine with 4 speed modes (i.e. 4 winding taps). In order to do the electronic speed control, the motor is locked on higher-speed connection. Also, the isolation helps when imersion is required - such as blender.

  • Is that a premade current transformer or was it wound by yourself? The reason I ask is that I am trying to design an AC ammeter with a meter with 75mV movement. Just curious

  • This is a current transformer I used in old project (built by a local company, specializad in magnetics) and mounted over a home made PCB. Current relation: 1000:1 (max primary 40A, 60Hz).

  • Nice video, Complete with overview of your measuremt setup and explanation of what's goin on. Keep up the good work.

Just a little note: Most scopes have an option to trigger from the mains frequency.

This will increase the trigger stability.

  • Most scopes can directly trigger from the mains frequency.

This gives much more stable triggering.

  • @lipin84 BTW Showing effect of inductance forcing current flow is great.

  • ThankyouThankyou!
