Dear friends and visitors,
Nice to meet you! Thanks for your coming to visit the exhibition and hope you like the artwork.
One day at May, I causally picked up a book in the science category which named 'British and other freshwater ciliated protozoa' written by 'Colin R. Curds and published at 1982. It has a lot of drawings about different kinds of protozoa, unfortunately I have no idea what protozoa is about because my science knowledge is only up to secondary school form three levels. However, I was fascinated with the beautiful drawings of the protozoa so I started to study the protozoa and want to know more about them.
Protozoa are cellular; they are complex organisms of the kingdom Protista. Because they are too small that range from 10 to 52 micrometer (i.e one micron equals to 1/1000 of a millimeter), which can only be seemed under the microscope. Although they are very small but they are crucial within the food chain in the ecological world. Protozoa are an important food source for microinvertebrates, below diagram of Food chains in the ocean shows they are the primary in the food chain. It can also be explained by its name in Greek which words proto, meaning "first", and zoa, meaning "animals".
The reason I wanted to draw this small living things was triggered by the oil spill disaster in Mexico this year, it has killed a lot of animal in the ocean e.g birds, fishes .However, this kind of environmental disaster also kills a lot of the 'micro animals' which our eyes can't see and off course, it includes the protozoa. So, I want to bring out their 'portrait' by a very old fashion way -- drawing, in order to let the ordinary peoples know their 'face' and know their existence.
Another subject matter in this exhibition is about jelly fish, I like jellyfish very much as they are so fragile, brainless. Their transparent body just like someone without secrets and without any cover. I am also fascinated with their slow movement just like a ballet dancer dancing slowly in the big deep blue ocean. However, some of them are dangerous. If you are being touched by their 'foots' (tentacles), it may cause death within three to twenty minutes.
Yours sincerely
