On Seijin-no-Hi (Coming of Age Day) in early January in Japan, an archery ritual known as Momote Shiki is held at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo for all those turning 20 for that year.

10 Archers at a time shoot two arrows at a central target.

Here's a short clip of a Shinto Priest shooting the Kabura-ya (whistling arrow):

  • I cannot wait to see that! looking forward to the Yabusame, for those who have not seen it before it is quite different to Kyudo and worth taking a look.

  • search my vids - I've got a short 30 second clip of yabusame up right now

  • Its nice to see the Shinto aspect of traditional Japan as it so so often overlooked by the Buddhist aspects of so many martial arts. I would love to see more.

  • stay tuned then as I have another archery event video to put together and right now I putting together a kind of music video for yabusame - mounted archery shinto ritual

  • I loved the whistling arrow.

  • 3:36 this guy is bossin

  • Awesome form of archery.

  • No thanks. Too self conscious for me and a tad fruity.

The mounted archery has greater appeal.

  • The arrow leaves the string:

    It may not hit,

    But it does not miss!

    Fascinating. Thanks for uploading, RoninDave.

  • Dont tell me that is all silk. I know much. I know enough to know that the sun can shine and can also reflect ones medals, but i do not know why or how, the samurai obtain lenins of any material for their culture. They are obviously cotton like, highly superior. Defined and dehardened. However, all I can think of is silk. Which would be impossible. Due to the chinese silk trade which is simular to diamonds and gasoline.
