This is a joule thief lighting a cfl off one 1.2v AA battery.
This coil has eight layers.
The joule thief is the same with 20 turns.

  • what happens if you replaced the toroid with a very small flyback transformer?

  • @powermaks

I haven't tried it but you can use a flyback transformer.Or use the joule thief to run the flyback transformer.

  • how many amps, from the batterie ?

  • With one 1.5v battery it was using 320 mA to get full brightness.

With two 1.5v batterys it was using 160mA.

  • when you wind the coil on the toroid, it's pretty critical as to how evenly you distribute the layers isn't it? i've had several coils that haven't worked and several that have but on the same type of ferrite. same wire too. like, the type, i didn't reuse it :) thanks!

  • Yes Jerronimo3000.

When I wound mine I didn't let the secondary coil over lap on to the primary coil eather.
