  • I just finished videotaping my Dad, OJ Blount's, latest hive design using top bars, lime for pest control and a viewing window. I hope to post it this weekend.

  • @ arcitejack - Glad you mentioned that. Actually Mr. Blount has switched to lime - a method he learned is done in Florida. When I go down for Father's Day, I'll be doing a new video showing that along with a new way to view the bees thru a glass back.

  • Interesting, but what is 'natural' about Langstroth hives?

  • @biobee - His modification of the bottom board using a cleaning tray to trap the pests and regularly removing them and also not treating with chemicals. Also putting it up higher on a post instead of low on blocks, reducing the entrance width & height, adding a landing board and putting ventilation at the top.

  • OJ Blount is always inventing improvements to his hive. Check back here in December when his latest hive will be shown. Due to popular demand, he is going to offer his hive design for sale. He also now sells just the metal floor parts with precise holes that can be used in existing hives. Send any requests here. Thanks for wanting to keep bees naturally!

  • OJ Blount does not have email but would be happy to phone you if you want to leave your number as he has unlimited long distance service if you are in the USA. Or he has his number posted but he goes to bed early so don't call past 8:30pm Central time. His number is 334-222-0751. He's saying a 5/32" hole which will not let the bees go thru unless they are very young but lets most of the pests fall thru. He custom orders them in bulk and will be happy to tell you where.
