One very specific recommendation for international leaders, in response to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's request for suggestions on how to create a better safer, world.
Heres a way international leaders can help make a better, safer world.
Why not do something that would brighten the lives of displaced kids and advance their educations?
How about educational toys? Specifically, flying discs... frisbees.
This is a video from Ethiopia, by the group DiscsOverAfrica. Their idea was to promote healthy activities among orphans and vulnerable children. The group struggled to fund one thousand discs in 2008. How many frisbees could world leaders give out if they put their minds to it?
Im especially concerned about kids made refugees by the Iraq war, but this idea would work for kids everywhere, in nearly every kind of situation.
In this video, by a group called Ultimate Peace, youre seeing Israeli and Palestinian teens having a very good time together.
Everyone knows that flying discs are lots of fun for kids of all ages, and that theyre relatively inexpensive. Plus, they have a nice flat surface which can carry a message. Thats where the educational part comes in.
Why not print up thousands and thousands of discs with appealing, informative content? From alphabets to astronomy, and from genetics to geography, there are countless ways to convey the beauty of knowledge and the joy of learning.
One of the great things about frisbee culture is that it inspires so many kinds of excellence. Collaborative play cultivates sharing and mutual attention. Experimentation sparks achievement in both athletics and artistry. Fascination with flight translates into curiosity about physics and aerodynamics. Friendly competition promotes teamwork and self-organized conflict management.
So heres an easy-to-fund idea that could make a huge difference in a lot of lives. Instead of raising yet another generation of kids to throw rocks and bombs, why not let them throw frisbees?
