Taxi lightbar-

My idea of the ultimate version of a taxi lightbar an idea born out of years of night experience from driving taxis.
Filmed off an iphone 3gs so I apologise for the quality.

Manufactured by Redtronic using their Megaflash 360 range of optics.
23 inch long bar.
This is a 1 off product.

The story so far-
During my 10 years working as a night taxi driver I hatched an idea of developing a new type of roofsign that could help you make night working a little easier.
After seeing my local police force have very high spec roofbars on bmw's I decided that if I could manufacturer something similar for taxis it would be a good, neat idea.

Features-
Non damaging fixing to the vehicle for bar and pmr aerial, you use a square roof bar to lock and mount the light bar and a separate bracket attached to the light bar for the aerial mount.
This non damaging fixing idea is to hopefully retain some of the resale value of the car. You have to drill the roofbar and bolt 2 security hex bolts through to secure.
Halogen Alley lights to help find house numbers whilst not holding a torch. Pointing left and right but wired together to keep it simple, these will require 1 separate switch inside the vehicle to operate. They have a decent range with 35w halogen bulb.
Amber dim cruise function for modules when the "for hire" taxi centre is on for more flag downs.
Centre TAXI section has a red filter to the rear and large TAXI text front and rear.
Steady amber on shown in all directions is legal at all speeds, flashing is not legal above 5 mph.
The taxi meter sign output operate these on & off as per most council regulations.
Warning function for when your waiting for a pickup on a busy road, whilst changing a puncture, reversing etc etc - to be wired in with hazard warning button in vehicle to keep install neat.
Quiet and stable at motorway speeds.
The lightbar will need wiring in by an auto electriction.

So after 2 years of working on the idea and design I just cant produce these at a competitive price to sell.
The idea works and looks just as I wanted, the quality is fantastic in that respect its been a success- its just the figures I cant get to work even if I bought in huge bulk.
To give an idea this item custom made cost in excess of £500, with brackets and a 2 switch pack.

This is no cheap chinese led light it is high quality alloy base made in uk by Redtronic using osram led's, it is a proper product. Police, Fire, Ambulance all over the world use them and this bar is to the same spec. Check out their website.

  • i think that is a cool idea. obviously you wouldn't use the flash modes while you are in motion, but the steady mode would be good for driving at night for visibility. and the flash patterns would be for when you are in a loading/unloading zone at the airport or train station and when your vehicle is disabled. Nice job.

  • @ERVMEDVAC Thanks, yeah upto 5mph with amber flashing is legal which is the whole idea when loading/unloading of flat tyre etc to use flashing mode when stationary.

This prototype is now in use in new york state but I am able to get hold of more from redtronic who I have an agreement with, they however are not cheap but quality is very high. A full width version mounted on an estate on roof rails like a police traffic estate would look really slick & neat I think.

  • markmck1994, have you ever worked as a taxi driver? Its a working vehicle and as such can be useful to have them fitted for use in the event of a breakdown, puncture, accident, stopped in a legal but dangerous place. Why do people have to trawl youtube just to criticise other peoples work and efforts? Nobody made you watch it. You must have a really sad life if thats all you have to do with your time.

  • It's on eBay, item number - 220838220506
