Some tunes on my Generation Bb whistle. Birds are making random noises and flying around in this one (off camera).

Trip to Skye is a tune I learned off an Irish "electronic" album I found at my local library several years ago when I first became interested in ITM. It's one of my favorite tunes. I wish more people on youtube would play it (hint hint ;). There's a mellow simplicity to it. I think it was played with a violin on that album, and I could never get it to sound "right" on a tin whistle. On the album it started very soft and was overall very "mellow;" perhaps tin whistle just isn't the proper instrument for it. It always sounds out of tune to me on whistle. I don't think my playing here is perfect, but I think it sounds better on the Bb whistle than on the D. Maybe it would sound nice on a low whistle. In a weird key.

The Foggy Dew is a very well known Irish tune so I don't think I need to really bother commenting on it. Only that I am very fond of the lyrical version by the Wolfe Tones.

  • Yay Foggy Dew! We have a guy that sings it at one of our local sessions who's really good. I'll probably be posting a video of it soon. (Me playinjg, not him singing unfortunately) I love it. Also, the birds are great. I wish my vids had birds. :)

  • @AchingOvaries

Wow that's awesome, I'd love to see it! I'll keep an eye for when you add it. :) Haha your vids have oldschool arcade machines instead!

  • @JonasOrlas This is true. :P You know, ironically, I recorded a demo of my new Dixon whistle in a stairwell (because of the reverb) about 20 minutes before I saw this vid. I actually played a bit of Foggy Dew in that video. Does that count? I'm not sure if I'll post it though, it's a thoroughly ridiculous video. :P

  • @AchingOvaries Wow, that's crazy, because I've been practicing on my Dixon flute the past few days, and went ahead and ordered a Dixon Trad whistle yesterday (first whistle purchase in over a year :). So I think you should post the video. :D Which Dixon whistle did you get??

  • @JonasOrlas I got the DX012, tunable low D polymer. Ultimately I'd like to get a Copeland or an Overton, but right now this was quick and readily available. (and *anything* is better than the Pipola low D whistle I was using)

What is the low D whistle that you have? I can't recognize it. (also, I posted the vid, prep for ridiculous Oji-dancing)

  • @AchingOvaries hahah, the video is very funny, i loved that stairwell reverb when iw as in uni! never managed to do a vid of it though.

It's a Howard Low D, their older model that is infamous for clogging but it has a more mellow, "haunting" sound, so I'm ok with dealing with it. :)

  • Nice! Trip to Skye is composed by John Whelan, there are a few of his versions posted here on YouTube. If you ever get a chance to see him perform, don't miss it.

I like the B flat. I've heard a few tunes lately played on the B flat, I need to get one.

  • @ChemtrailsEire I posted a video response, hope you get it. I recorded it with Cubase and just a little reverb. Cheers! :0))

  • Great tune and no you're not out of tune. I'm Irish and hear it a lot. My friend plays a demon version on a homemade Aluminium Low Whistle. :D

I'll look for one of my videos of him playing a tune with the one mentioned above and then overdubbed with a very high-pitched Chinese Wooden Whistle...I'll be back.

    Cheers! :D

  • @JonasOrlas I know what you mean about the clogging. (I think I've told you this) but my Busman whistle clogs pretty bad. Also, my Pipola low D clogs too. I have to put a drop of dish soap in the mouth opening or I can't even finish a full song on the Busman. Have you tried that? It makes *all* the difference.

  • my dearest lady you are wonderful keep it up
