Actually, I won't debate the elephants criminal lifestyle, BUT, the actual reason was that he was trying to sucker people into beliving that DC was safe, and AC was too dangerous. Who was trying to power cities with the DC system? Edison.

We use AC today because DC sucks for distance of transmission.

Edison electrocuted Topsy to prove the dangers of alternating current. George Westinghouse and Nicola Tesla pushed for alternating current because it was better, but Edison held all the patents for direct current and made a lot of money from it.

So, he was only trying to blacken the names of Westinghouse and Tesla, not proving the power of electricity.

Edison is repulsive to me. Telsa to my knowledge wasn't cruel and was very generous with his ideas and wanted to help mankind. Edison basically just had his own ego and interests at heart. You can probably lump JP Morgan and Edison in the same bed. THink telsa even wound up dying penniless and he was a far supierior scientist and inventor to Edison. SOmetimes I even wonder if that sick Edison and power hungry JP Morgan had something to do with Telsa's demise

The elephant was to be killed and Edison used this opportunity to scare people against the use of AC electricity (he being a supporter of DC electricity, he'd make a lot of money if it became used). This happened during the 'War of currents' which was happening around that time (wiki for full story). Just for reference he used 6600 volts, as little 50mili volts at half a amp can kill a human.

Also DC is a lot more dangerous than AC ;)

That was so long ago and, be glad topsy was electrocuted instaed of hung.

Not that topsy should die but, well that was over 100 years ago.

people take this waaaay too far.

Its kinda like bombing an abortion clinic and killing three or four people to save a fetus.
