Humans are apes. Great apes. Apes all belong to the superfamily Hominoidea. The great apes are the family Hominidae which we share with the Chimpanzees, Gorillas and the Orangutan. Our DNA is less than 2 percent different from that of chimpanzees, so from a biological viewpoint, what is it that makes humans so different from the other great apes? Find out what our ape cousins can do -- and what they can't.

  • I just have one question after watching this. Why did humans get weaker jaws, what happened to us that didn't happen to apes?

  • All biological structures have a resource costs attached to them. This can be in building and maintaining the structure (in the case of the jaw). If this additional cost provides an added benefit to the individual over one without it, it can be selected for. If there is no additional benefit or a detriment then it can be selected against.

  • In other words it is Natural Selection. The best adapted to their environment will be able to procreate more readily. If that person/animal procreates more then their genes are spread more widely and rapidly. The gene is passed down and if it continues to benifit that species then that gene will eventually become the predominant gene.

  • In a nutshell

  • thanks for uploading this!

  • excuse my grammar, that's a rudimentary mistake :S there are *

  • there's more humans born in two days than all the great apes COMBINED??? we have to protect them, NOW!

  • the human population is too large now for your one gene to sustain itself

  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • fascinating enjoyed it more than the history channel one but for some reason National Geographic always seems to put out the best documentaries

  • Invention of the blow job and the resistance to biting down because it would get them slapped lead to loose jaws.
