I gess you lose me when I know Penta means 5 notes. You are showing much more than 5 notes. Also when does a person know whether they need a pentetonic or a blues scale, for example?

This is how people need to learn guitar. Having the fretboard laid out right in front of them. Nice lesson.

where were you when I first picked up the guitar... most useful tutorial on youtube concerning guitar! easily the best one I've watched, although I can't play any of them yet, I now understand what the hell scales are and what they are good for. Thanks in bunches....

@sunexerxfaenxgal dont know... but small steps... small steps..
Great tutorial......A very simple way to learn and memorize the modes is to sing "DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO"--> that's Ionian, start with the 2nd note until its octave is Dorian.. same goes with the rest of the notes

@dpsd This is an excellent idea! I remember Steve Via talking about when he learned the modes from Joe Satriani, he would sing them because each one has a "aural flavor." And using them correctly is to get their unique sound applied to the song or solo you are doing. Thanks.

SHIT! this was a huge deal to me! made me get a whole new perspective, never really goten into scales and modes, thanks! so btw, should I ignore the modes until I've mastered the penatonic patterns?

@sunexerxfaenxgal Thanks! Most people learn the pentatonic scales first and if you play rock, you'll get a lot of mileage out of this scale.
