Congressman Paul Ryan (WI-01)
U.S. House of Representatives
April 22, 2009

Lets all admit that both parties have made mistakes in the past. The question is: are we going to make things worse or are we going to make things better?

It is so clear, so obvious, that piling on a new mountain of debt, a new gusher of spending, and the largest tax increase in American history is not going to make things better, it is going to makes things worse.

The one thing that the American people get out of this is a choice. We disagree with this budget. Rather than simply criticizing, we proposed an alternative an alternative that keeps taxes down and helps small businesses, an alternative that controls and cuts spending, an alternative that gets our debt under control and puts us on a path to pay our debt off.

It is a stark difference than this budget that is being steamrolled through Congress to give us the largest expansion in government weve seen in the history of this country the third and final great wave, building on the New Deal and Great Society. It is a budget that doubles the national debt in 5.5 years, and triples it in 10.5 years. It is a budget that gives us a huge tax increase in the midst of a recession. It makes everybody pay more for energy.

It is a budget born upon the philosophy that the government must grow for society to grow. We reject that idea, and that is why we are not supporting this budget.

  • I love this guy!

  • I don't get how this man can claim he is fiscally responsible. How did congress take a $400 billion surplus to $1 trillion dollar deficit from 2000-2008? Rubber stamping unnecessary tax cuts and wars? Creating a whole new trillion dollar entitlement? This man failed the people for a decade and now he wants to put blame on everyone but himself. What a snake. I don't understand how people think borrow and spend Republicans are better than tax and spend Democrats. Eventually we must pay.

  • Both parties screwed up? No kidding, Mr. Ryan! You voted for eight straight Bush budgets, meaning you spent $20 trillion dollars of taxpayer dollars and put us deeper into debt.

  • Where do we go from here? How about throwing these insurance companys in the garbage where they belong and getting Single Payer Healthcare.

  • @TeslaDRay .I think I saw a video somewhere of Paul Ryan criticizing the Iraq War.

  • This is one of the most respectful discussions of the issues I have seen here. We need more open, honest and fact based discussions amongst intelligent people. Congratulations and keep the faith.

  • i like paul ryan, but i wonder (assuming he was around then) supported the iraq war and all it's funding and torture and wonder if he added to the rubber stamping they all gave to bush in his terms. i hope not. you see it's like ping pong, the parties are the paddles and we (not everyone though) are the balls, the sheep. left-right paradigm, repubs triple government and dems are against it, then dems win and they continue the sick policies and its the repubs that are outsiders. i don't think so.
