How to make a fractal image in Gimp

hi, its not long since i faced fractals and i wondered if i could create an image that would work like fractal- as closer you get to it the more you see, but as i noticed, fractals are usually made from already created sample, , but is it possible to make it from particular image, like in ps- you open and then manipulate it. and also i wondered, if when you get closer to see more could it appear as some kind of particular picture, not only as an ornament.

i already knew how to do the nature flame but i did not know you could just select a gradiant and it would be used on the flame nice vid by the way... and also another way is to make a nature flame it the same steps but on a seperate layer alpha to selection and choose colors and color in at your own pattern
