You can buy beer from vending machines on the street. You can drink in public places. It isn't exactly difficult to get hold of alcohol and drink it freely in Japan.

It's off of the soundtrack to Lost In Translation. "Alone In Kyoto" by Air (the French band.) The entire CD is awesome.

Well, isn't it obvious? Seijin shiki is after all a ceremony, so it's likely to have alcahol consumption by people of almost all ages.

legal age is 20 in Japan, although it isn't strickly enforced. They have a big ceremony called "seijin shiki", which is coming up in a couple weeks
