The F# on the bass would be an octave lower than the F# on the 8 string guitar, which is almost impossible for the human ear to hear. I've seen som people tune their basses with a low F#, but wven the low B on a 5 string is difficult to hear.

there are 7 strings and even 12 strings

I thought standard tring bass followed the same principal as an 8 string guitar where u just add lower strings so itd be F# B E A D G. Then again i'm a lead guitarist not a bassist so what do i know :P

I've been playing 4-stringed basses for about 6 years until this year I finally bought a 5-string. Its like learning another instrument in my opinion. I think I will wait a while before I get a 6-string.
