No, it's not that the police are the enemy; just a particular type of thinking. The chorus "Is it a gun, is it a knife, is it a wallet, this is your life," shows a police officer having to make a split second decision with his own life perhaps in the balance. It recognises the dangers that the police face. The point is that there is an inherent xenophobia buried within so much of society. That is the enemy, not any individual or organisation.

actually i was in the states when this whole issue happened . when the cops who did this were pleaded not guilty in court and after a very short time Bruce performed American Skin for the first time in Atlanta . i did go into Wiki cause i didn't remember the name of the victim ...

It was a wallet,and the song was inspired,and is about the death of Amadou Diallo.All he did was to pull out his wallet for his ID and he was shot 41(!) times.this is a protest song against Police brutality and racism .no more,no less.Bruce and the band were even boycotted because of this song by the NYPD who asked all security firms not to secure the shows at MSG .Bruce replied on stage with a newer song "code of silence" that opened NY shows, the parents of the victim were there . GREAT SONG .
