This is just my interpretation of the video, but I think the box represents how he can make everyone happy (each person gets something from him that they need/want/could be cheered up by--the girl, a teddy; the homeless man, food; etc).
--That is, everyone but the one woman he's truly after. He finds he has nothing to offer but himself, and she isn't interested. ("take my hand/what have i got left for you to take?") In the end, he's lonely. Thus, the box has a cat to keep him company. :)
