I think you are confusing this song with a few other doo wop songs that were remakes of WWII era songs such as "You Belong to me" by the Duprees. This song was co-written by Beaumont of this group and was not a WWII song, but newly released in the late 50's.

You misunderstand - I mean when women WEREN'T butch and masculine (without any of male positives, like talent and ability) as now.
This period up to and including the 70s were when women were feminine, as opposed to whiningly butch as now.

@PhilK1231 Oh I don't know I grew up in this era and I would have to say all the girls were just as good as they are today. Maybe even better. In fact now that I think about it I know they were better!
