Sony Bloggie CM5 vs. Vado HD

Outdoor comparison of the Bloggie CM5 and the Vado HD at 720p and 1080p @ 30 and 60 fps.

Note: the Sony at 1080 is -not- zoomed in, this is the widest it can record. for some reason, when switching from 720p to 1080p the field of view becomes significantly narrower.

I also tried the Sony indoors, in relatively low light conditions, but there was no comparison, the CM5 performs indoors as well as a cheap web-camera, regardless of the mode or frame rate.

The Vado seems crisper even when compared to the 1080p. However, the color reproduction of the Sony (especially the sky and in high-contrast situations) is more accurate. Also the Sony comes with a 5x optical zoom, and an image stabilization which however does not seem to do much and only works in the 720p/30fps mode. The Vado comes with the widest lens in the market, only digital zoom, and no image stabilization. Thus, a tipod is the only way to get a steady video from these pocket models.

There are no manual settings in either model, the Sony comes with auto-focus, while the Vado is focus free. However, the Vado remains surprisingly crisp and in focus (from 1m and further) while the Sony will try to refocus if someone or something comes into the frame (there is no way to turn auto-focus off) when panning and when zooming. Under these conditions, focus free performs much better.

@johnykonta57 .. the camera on the iPhone 4 and the 4th gen iPod are -not- the same, they do have the same resolution but they do not have the same lens or software to make/compress/white balance the video .. just fyi to check that out ; )

strange .. when the sony changed to 60fps @ 1..22 the Q got better on my screen ?? the Vado? looked better most of the time though.

Bloggie gives a smoother shot at 720P 60fps but something has to be done about it's poor focus.

@reegg96 .. i did't have the chance the test the PlayTouch, but if it is as good as the PlaySport it should be great and i think they are very comparable in video resolution and quality - major difference would be the form factor. a side-by-side could only show on a per-frame basis which one is "better" in the eyes of the beholder : )
