@imagineerboi well... it's in the book actually :P i don't quite remember the exact setting, since it's been 5 years since i read the book, but in the following books it's at least been hinted at that Renly is gay. So it's completely legitimate for HBO to also include it.

Renly is not sly, underhanded, effeminate, petulant or mean-spirited, You can be a gay character and still be brave, loveable, honorable and kind. The only bad thing about Renly is that he enjoys spending money on luxurious shows and putting on a good show. He is meant to be the exact opposite of Stannis, who has no real sexuality at all and seems to be incapable of intimacy with anyone.
