Interactive Learning: Continuing Legal Education

Growing out of a recommendation of the CLE Advisory Group, ILSCCP developed a video to demonstrate interactive learning to assist CLE providers in the development of professional responsibility courses. Because the typical retention rate for courses delivered via lecture (individual or panel lecture) is 10-15% and because most CLE courses are delivered by lecture, there is significant need to increase the awareness of quality teaching methods for those delivering professional responsibility CLE.

On November 3, 2011, the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism (ILSCCP) released a free video on YouTube entitled: "Professional Responsibility CLE - Creating an Interactive Learning Experience." The 32-minute video shows content providers how to design and deliver an interactive professional responsibility CLE program.

Facilitated by Jayne Reardon, Executive Director of ILSCCP; Audrey Lee, Perspective Principal; and Donna Crawford, Education Director at ILSCCP, the program has three learning objectives: Determine why interactive learning is important and beneficial for learners Gain new facilitation skills Get suggestions for designing an interactive course

Using short vignettes, the video compares the audience reaction and level of engagement and learning between a "Just Tell Me" CLE experience and an interactive CLE experience. Then, as the audience has just experienced interactivity as a learner, they are better able to design an interactive program as the provider. The video then reviews critical skills for facilitators essential for an interactive learning experience, and reviews ideas for creating an interactive course.
