The Economics of Sanitation Initiative (ESI) is a multi-country study launched in 2007 as a response by the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Program to address major gaps in evidence among developing countries on the economic aspects of sanitation. Its objective is to provide economic evidence to increase the volumes and efficiency of public and private spending on sanitation. The reports discussing Phase II of ESI -- launched during World Water Week 2011 in Stockholm -- provide key findings of the study, including the results of cost-benefit analyses on alternative sanitation options performed in countries throughout Southeast Asia.
