One man was arrested as about 100 demonstrators gathered in front of the Federal Court House in Kansas City, MO today to protest a Supreme Court decision giving corporations the same rights as individuals.
The rally was organized by Mary Lindsay of the Kansas City Move To Amend group and coincided with similar rallies at court houses across the United States under the umbrella of the National Move To Amend organization which is seeking support for a constitutional amendment that would overturn the "Citizens United" ruling made by the Supreme Court of the United States one year ago affirming corporations are persons entitled to the same constitutional rights as human individuals.
The demonstration remained peaceful as most of the protestors stayed in the Illus Davis Civic Mall across the street from the court house.
William H. (Bill) Drummond was arrested when he and another protestor attempted to take their signs and an American flag to the steps of the courthouse.
As he was being detained by officers and taken into the courthouse Drummond was yelling, "I have a right to be here. This is my courthouse."
While the arrest took place the group across the street chanted, "Shame! Shame! Shame!"
According to the Kansas City Star, "A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said Drummond was ticketed for failing to obey a lawful order, given a May 11 court date and released."
The rally continued with singing, chanting, sign waving and talks by several speakers, and there was no further incident.
I just noticed an error in the narration. The Supreme Court's Citizen United ruling was made two years ago.
