@KMallinson - and, in fact, she's a disservice to women in general. She's just trying to re-impose a 1950's style "proper etiquette in mixed company" set of rules, but couch it in feminist terms. Implicit in her opinion is that women are too delicate to handle being offended with rude words. Men, of course, are dicks who can go fuck themselves.
@KMallinson - But, women who call men dicks, or men who call men cunts, or women who call men assholes - they're not belittling? No objectification there? How the hell does she know? She's a skeptic - does she have a study showing or providing any evidence that the mindsets of men using the word cunt is different than the mindset of women using the word dick?
What she said is silly tripe, and she pretty much makes it up as she goes along.
@PeytonFarquhar1 Besides, there's a context of power relationship in terms like "cunt". Her objections were never in regards to profanity or decency; it's always been the nature and context of the term. Men who call women cunts are usually belitting and objectifying women in general.
Still, it's a fair point, one I might even bring up with her. But it does not hurt the efficacy of what she's said.
@PeytonFarquhar1 Betwixt you and her, it seems pretty clear who's the know-nothing complainer. Reading her material and watching her shorts, she's raised scientific awareness about misinformation that by design or negligence subjugates women, and here you are, in a furor, with a vague defamation. Clearly this is about some other issue, considering your attitude, but unless this is all hyperbole, this isn't a very-well informed complaint. There are real problems to get angry over.
@KMallinson - I haven't extrapolated anything. I've followed her blog, and she sees fit to refer to people as dicks , but also complain about other people's use of the word "cunt." Yes, that's a sense of entitlement, when one can lecture others on proper word usage relative to profanity, but feel freely entitled to use profanity as one sees fit.
@PeytonFarquhar1 You're extrapolating and you know it. There has been no indication that she acts like she is the boss of the English language. You have noticed that she began a sceptic's community of women's issues, noticed that it employs the term "chick", and began freeloading premises about her alleged sense of entitlement. I'm glad that you're trying to spread awareness about women's issues, but you can choose a wiser target than the leader of a women's awareness community.
