Installation and interdisciplinary Performance: dance and digital arts
Domenico Sciajno 2011
The compositional-Executive principle on which the BliTzLive performance and processes that characterize it outlines a complex system in which synergies and emergencies are instances of a process of an outcome difficult to predict. Nevertheless that tends to a coherent and consistent homogeneity capable to express a meaning as it happens between the natural and spontaneous phenomena studied in Synergetics. This, not surprisingly, is the science of the combined effects. In Synergetics In fact, the different parts of a system are governed by a principle of order which, in turn, is produced by the combined and coordinated use of different parts. A self-organizing collective phenomenon thus generated from the competition and at the same time the cooperation between the elements that constitute it.
BliTzLab Interdisciplinary Ensemble is a collective of digital artists, electronic musicians and dancers. It was formed through a series of workshops designed and conducted by Domenico Sciajno, musician and composer active in the field of mixed media that has developed an intermediate and interdisciplinary working method derived from his composition techniques. The performers are, in fact, invited to develope processes and formal-expressive creative paths through some of his strategies of sound and music generation and organization.
The strategies adopted by Sciajno aim to enhance and develop the contributions of individual performers, stimulate creative and expressive processes by which each player becomes part of a whole, interacting and integrating with the rest of the group as well as interact and integrate the voices of musical instruments in a composition for orchestra. However, compared with traditional musical compositions, this score is not written for specific instruments: through an appropriately designed symbols it can be interpreted through any creative discipline.
Another peculiarity is that while the scores based on a rigorously detailed system often have to obtain a predictable result, this method is based on the interpretation of symbols arranged in a combinatorial way, generating events and synergies only partially predictable.
Workshops
Divided into several groups were held in a year: structured group meetings and intensive individual work involved dancers and all those who creatively use the computer to generate sound, video, image, graphics, text, web art, architecture and interaction design. Through auditions have been set up working groups that took part in the workshop and now constitute a real interdisciplinary ensemble.
During each workshop, after a brief theoretical and conceptual premise, the groups started developing practical strategies and interactions designed to create a performative and immersive environment. A complex architecture capable of integrating the different contributions of creative performers, developed through the interdisciplinary interpretation of the score.
The interdisciplinary score
The performers in BliTzLive interprets a graphic score that is on a special deck of cards specially designed.
The structure and development of BliTzLive performance is, as in almost all the compositions interpreters assigned to a system (score) of systems (actors-performers).
The exchange of information and synergies implemented are based on essential and flexible processes conveyed by the symbols on the score and their interdependence is the result of random combinations. These processes, expressed by the correlation of three symbols on each card as well as leaving ample room for interpretation and development mean that any system can autonomously deliver significant results in terms of both form and content. The score-cards in the deck are 48, divided into 12 basic processes, which are characterized by certain variables associated with them.
On each card there are three symbols, one in the middle, one at the top right and one at bottom left, which are combined together: the central defining the creative process itself and the other two are orders of magnitude that characterizes it. While the creative process can be addressed independently of the discipline adopted, the variables associated with them are specific for each discipline.
The cards are given to each interpreter before execution. All the performers will then simultaneously interpret each sequence according to the cards they received.
For each performance each interpreter will be performing new and unpredictable sequence. The score includes a conductor, which controls some aspects in real time and adjusts the diffusion and the streams of sounds, visuals and motions, developed by the interpreters.
To do this, the director uses a system of pre-defined codes, against which the performers know how to behave.
