I am adopted and have known so my whole life. I was a huge Joni Mitchell fan at the tender age of 17. I am now 46 and can't hear " Little Green" without a few tears falling. I didn't know about her daughter until this moment and now realise why the song is so powerful for me.

Damn, if it had only been five years later, around 1969, she coulda had her baby and kept her as a single mother. By then women were telling
the self righteous assholes to go screw themselves.

Actually i remember her song from 1982, Chinese cafe, with lyrics: ""My child's a stranger, I bore her,
But i could not raise her,'
Nobody was clued in by that, 10 years before, that she
had a baby? Or they just thought it was
the character in the song. Or the album was so ignored it just didnt kick up any dust. Pity, its a terrific song, its on YouTurbe, find and enjoy!

@briteness ""thank gawd joni did not have an abortion im sure she feels the same way""
Im sure that she is not opposed to women making their own choices.

Well, i grew up in a rightwing churchgoing anti hippie (ie anti Joni) red state where
we heard little else. They were full of judgement for the likes of her with their cute little names like "slut" "whore" and "the town pump.""
Yep, they used the bastard word then &they want to TODAY. They think there needs to be a stigma like there was in the 50's. Many rightwads & fundies believe this.
Little Tripp Palin would be the nation's #1 bastard if they got their way.

@Hexl702 I, for one, would never for even the briefest moment insult anybody who gave birth to a child, whether planned or unplanned, in the context of a 'relationship' or not. And I don't think I know anybody who would. And nobody, but nobody, uses the word 'bastard' anymore. Have you ever heard it actually used about an actual child, or seen it used in print to describe somebody? I have not.
But thank God Joni Mitchell did not have an abortion. I am sure she feels the same way.

@swampzoid Horseshit. Joni was on her own, busking for chump change. She didn't make squat until the late sixties, four years after this gut wreching event. Heartless jerk.

@WHACKBUSH Please don't bash Christians in this argument. I don't see where Christianity has had any bearing on this catfight.

@smexxiboi55 Please do not pay any attention to these awful trolls! If nothing else, you now see what the price is for being in the "spotlight" and having fools and idiots make accusations and assumptions about you. And yes, "They don't even know you"!
Ignore them! They are ultimately jealous and want your energy and attention. "Don't give it to them"! They are NEVER worth it! Stay strong and sane. ;)

Joni came from a intact family with money but she gave up her child because she was diving headlong into a music career that was begining to gain alot of attention. Joni claims that she was a starving artist. I love Joni's music totally but she really has a hard edge as a person.
t'was when i first heard/watched a fellow youngster (back in my high school years) of a kid show named ' 5 AND UP ', singing a song with a line that goes like this, and the seasons they go round and round... since then, i've been singin that line though i don't even know the title/artist. it was just when i'm workin already that i decided to google it, and the rest is history..
RE: J. MITCHELL's LIFE, WHAT MATTERS MOST IS THAT WE AS HUMANS ARE TRYIN OUR VERY BEST TO CORRECT OUR PAST MISTAKES...
