Whitehouse: The Only Climate Deniers Left Are At ExxonMobil And The Senate

July 7, 2009: Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse describes the clean energy race, saying he doesn't want the United States left at the back of the parade holding the broom. He continues, saying that "this is probably -- along with the ExxonMobil board room -- the last place that sober people debate whether or not these problems are real."

WHITEHOUSE: The last thing is we have the choice now to be on the front end or the tail end of progress. I saw in the newspaper the other day that Toyota had something like 2000 patents that it's filed to protect its hybrid technology to keep people from competing. That is the privilege that you get when you are the front runner. And China and Japan and Europe, countries all over the place, are investing to put their industries at the front. I do not want to see American industries at the back of that parade with a broom, I want to see us at the front leading. The four of you have the capacity to make -- to solve those four problems, to solve those issues for the american people. We know that this is probably -- along with the ExxonMobil board room -- the last place that sober people debate whether or not these problems are real, but we intend to work with you anyway, and we hope to give you strong legislative support if we can.
