Intimate Relations-Julie Walters
Based on a true story, this dark, disturbing comedy goes in

unexpected directions and makes you laugh at the most

appalling things. At the center of this story is the aptly

named Harold Guppy (Rupert Graves), an orphan who is

fresh out of the navy in 1950s London. He finds a situation

as a boarder in the Beasley household, where husband

Stanley (Matthew Walker) is no match for his hard-working,

ever-industrious wife, Marjorie (Julie Walters). Marjorie, put

off by the notion of sex with her husband, hungrily pursues

the idea with her handsome young lodger, which triggers

bouts of jealousy from her budding teen daughter, Joyce

(Laura Sadler). This leads to an unsavory triangle; the

sharklike Marjorie can't get enough of Guppy, leading to the

shocking finale. Walters is a juggernaut and Graves plays a

seeming innocent who can't get out of her--or his own--way.

  • you think to yourself how twisted this movie is - then you remember its based on a true story *shudder - Rupert Graves is gorgeous btw ;) haha

  • The 'banging the lodger' aspect of this story (as distinct from the extent of Marjorie's 'hippo'-crisy and manipulation and Harold's f***ed-up passivity) is not unrealistic for Fifties Britain. There was a comparable case in my own family: a longstanding (and childless) marriage in which the husband had his mistress living in the spare room – with her/his child – seemingly all 'tolerated' by the wife. It continues to perplex my family this day...

  • lol at 'Hippo'. did he mean hypocrite?

Anyway how do these kind of people sleep at night(no joke intended) having never seen this before therefore not knowing how it ends, I think Harold should have faked his death and run away with Jean to Ireland or a small village in Wales. Poor guy, I hope this woman goes mad and spends her life in an asylum, she's a total nutter. I understand that she's weak and messed up in her head but intentionally ruining someone's life cannot be excused.

  • What a SICK woman. EW.

  • Evil horrible cow

  • Two wonderful actors on the same screen!

  • she's a blackmailer, too.

  • Part of this film are so sad..passion, desire, it makes us all so fragile. Julie's character is remarkably sad and weak.
