True, Ned Stark was the hand but he didn't want the job. He only took it because Robert basically made him. If Ned was after power he would have gladly taken the offer to become one of the only two men in the world to be able to sit on the iron throne.

Ned Stark used to bee hand of the king but then he took an Axe throug the neck

Almost every character is after power. Not Ned though. Of course look where that got him.

What I love about the books is the fact that George R.R. Martin isn't afraid to show the characters' flaws. No one is innocent, everyone wants power, and everyone can die. That's the only way to keep the story going, in an interesting and realistic way.
