Installation of dripping honey interacting with the urban environment of Toronto by artist Gareth Bate. http://www.garethbate.com

ARTIST STATEMENT:
In perilous times, this installation represents a sense of fragility and interconnectedness. We seem to operate under the strange idea that culture is separate from nature, as opposed to being a manifestation.

The Western honey bee is increasingly under threat from Colony Collapse Disorder where entire bee colonies vanish. When honey drips it naturally forms arches that resemble those of roman architecture. For me this installation is a metaphor for the rise and fall of a civilization.

EXHIBITIONS:
Urban Honey Installation took place OCAD University' Sharp Centre for Design in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in May, 2007. I currently have a new Honey Installation called "Colony Collapse" showing at Deleon White Gallery in Toronto as part of the exhibition "Bigger, Bigger and More Desperate" sponsored by Ecotecture Canada.

  • ok at first i was amazed

I thought that the honey was melted glass... but later in the video i realized u just poured honey on the window... WTH WOULD U DO THAT!!! LOL

  • Yes it is honey poured on the glass. The point was the remarkable arch forms that the honey makes when it drips, and the interaction between those forms and the architecture.

  • Cooler than the penance. I can relate to this one. At least you are not crawling down the street dripping with honey!

  • That would not be fun.

  • This is so beautiful. I love it! Amazing. It is such a simple gesture yet so stunning. I'm so glad to be seeing your work. This is so different from your Penance video!

  • thanks, I'm glad you like it. I did a similar piece a few weeks ago at Deleon White Gallery in Toronto sponsored by Ecotecture Canada. I am hoping to upload the video from that one soon. That one is more representational imagery.

  • LOL maybe if it had a use at all..

  • beautiful.

  • This is a beautiful piece with detailed contrast. You capture the traces and instances of city life. Merci.

  • Yes, I have just uploaded it. It is honey dripping down the windows. This kind of honey naturally drips in those arch shapes. It is pretty amazing.
