This is a short animation of a Tie Fighter leaving a hangar. The model was taken from Google Sketchup 3D Warehouse, and composited with Adobe After Effects.

My Inspiration was the movie Star Trek.

  • I like the lens flare, but the model could be better.

I might know a way to help you animate these models directly in after effects instead of animating it in sketchup and then exporting it as an animation to After effects.

Go to my channel and you'll see some results.

  • @scifiroel thanks for the advice!

  • @scifiroel It's easier to animate in After Effects, but it lags like crazy. AE's not meant for any 3D models, just basic geometry. It can handle about 100 layers (or squares) on my laptop, but on mos PCs it could probably run about 50-70.

But I agree. the model needs work. There's a free model for Blender that looks great, so I would really recommend that one.

  • @TheFXGuy I'll look into it. I agree about AE. it's mostly why I did the animation in sketchup. I'm curious about blender though. Thanks for the tips!

    no problem.

the model I was talking about is on e2-productions com. To find the actual page, google blender model repository. It's under downloads -> vehicles -> sci fi -> vader tie. Parent all of the sections to an empty to animate it easier.

To do that first make an empty. Hit [a] twice to select all and then [shift]-right click on everything but the tie fighter parts to deselect them. Then, [shift]-right click on the empty and hit [control]-[p] to parent.
