@164ItsAllAboutMe164 Luis was going to meet Valentin's girlfriend (the girl in the car) to give the information he gave to him, but the police came and started the shots cause Luis was supposed to continue to help them, not Valentin. So, the resistence (the gilr and the guy in the car) realized that he had information and if the police caught, he would talk, so they kill him. (sorry for the english)

I just watched this movie and I loved it to pieces. But the ending confused to me. I don't understand why Luis (Hurt) sets up a rendezvous with the police and why they all start shooting at him. And the last scene where Valentin (Julia) gets shot up with morphine after being brutally beaten by his captors and dreams of his one true love. It seems awfully depressing because Valentin's just gonna wake up and get tortured some more. But mostly I don't understand why Luis got shot. Somebody explain?

The most interesting theme of the movie is the exchange that ocurred between the two men thrown into exceptional circumstancs i.e. one 'taught' the other to escape into an inner world beyond the reach of torture (read the ancient Greek Philosopher Epitectus)the other inspired his friend to find inner courage which seemed antithetical to to gay protagonist's personality. Both grew in human terms and found new freedom...it goes well beyong learning to love regardless of sexual orientation etc...

I read the book and then saw the movie. I'm argentinian and as such an spanish speaker. The movie doesn't reflect many things, one of them how Valentin (the more masculine character) uses Molina (the transexual) to satisfy him sexually, often with disgust and telling him to "shut up and hold still" and then to help him outside and die for a cause it wasn't his. Regardless of anything, a way to spoil a book, a fine book whose moral is "don't love people who will f@#ck you over", in both cases.

And it hit me hard because I checked his bio stuff and I had no idea he died THAT long ago. I was a big fan of the Street Fighter movie, although I was 8 years old, and now that I know he died in 1994, it seems so weird. Because that means he died the year that Street Fighter was released and was ill with cancer while he filmed it. It puts you in a different perspective. It's sad.
