we walk with the farmworkers of immokalee to support their plea for decent living conditions and a just wage. we walked from publix corp hq in lakeland to a city park 2 miles away for a large rally and prayers. we were probably between 800 and 1,000 strong, and we came from all walks of life: young & old, black, white, and brown. contrary to its positive, good-neighbor image among its customers, behind the scenes publix has been holding out on its tomato pickers, buying from growers with an atrocious history of paying scavenger wages, enforcing inhuman living conditions, and even fostering court-documented slavery. this, when other name brand retailers & restaurants have switched to growers who support improvements, like yum foods (taco bell, burger king) and whole foods. the walk was peaceful but full of vitality. the range of ages was amazing & gratifying- tots to teens to tottering folk like me.
