Belgium: The lock Péronnes at the Canal Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes

The Canal Blaton-Nimy-Péronnes is a channel in Belgium, that connects Nimy (near Mons, at the Lac du Grand Large) with Péronnes at the Scheldt. It forms with the Canal du Centre and the Canal Brussels-Charleroi, the connection between the Scheldt and the Meuse
The channel replaces the old-Antoing Pommerœul Canal that was opened in 1826. At that time, the Borinage needed an efficient means of transport to deliver the huge amount of coal, that was collected in the mines in the region.
The canal runs almost throughout its length at the same level. Shortly before the Scheldt estuary the difference in the height of 18.10 meters is overcome by two locks:
* Péronnes 1: lock of 86 mx 12 m - 12.50 m * Péronnes 2: lock of 86 mx 12 m - 5.60 m

Het kanaal Blaton-Nimy-Péronnes is een kanaal in België, dat Nimy (nabij Bergen, bij het meer "Grand Large") verbindt met Peronnes aan de Schelde. Het vormt met het Canal du Centre en het kanaal Brussel-Charleroi, de verbinding tussen de Schelde en de Maas
Het kanaal vervangt het oude kanaal Pommerœul-Antoing, dat in 1826 open gesteld werd. In die periode had de Borinage behoefte aan een efficiënte manier van vervoer van de enorme hoeveelheid verzamelde kolen, die de mijnen in de regio leverden.
Het kanaal loopt vrijwel over zijn gehele lengte op hetzelfde niveau. Kort voor de monding in de Schelde wordt het hoogteverschil van 18,10 m overwonnen door 2 sluizen: * Péronnes 1: sluis van 86 m x 12 m - verval van 12,50 m
* Péronnes 2: sluis van 86 m x 12 m - verval van 5,60 m

Yes, there can be a real traffic...:-) I have no idea, how the rivers in Italy are. My watermap shows only the river Po as a navigable river.

These channels are real acquatic streets.......in Italy we have no culture to waterways.......
