Currently the cheapest 3TB drive i'm aware of- quick video on how to get the drive out from the enclosure:

1) Pop the front cover off by levering from the "hitachi logo"
2) Undo the 2 screws now exposed
3) Pop the top off
4) Remove the 6 screws now exposed
5) Remove the disk/rails etc
6) Remove the 6 screws from the rails
7) Slide the disk out

  • Why are you destroying it? This drive and wd 3tb my book essentials are priced at $129 on amazon. Can't decide which one to get. Does this drive have password protection ? Automatic backup software? What's the actual total tb/gb space with or without software ? Maybe 2tb/ 800gb? Does this drive get hot quickly? Is it 7200rpm with 16mb cache? Is the data transfer rate decent? Answers on these things would be greatly appreciated by someone who's evaluated the drive. Thanks !!!!!

  • @1misanthropist i'm not destroying it- i'm getting the INTERNAL drive out from the EXTERNAL enclosure (so i can install it in a normal 3.5" internal bay (cheaper than buying an internal drive strangely).

drive performs very well- haven't noticed it hot but haven't really checked. you can create a single 2794.39GB partition. and i haven't looked to see what backup software/options may or may not have come with the drive

  • does this void the warranty?

  • hey quick question. i have this drive but i accidental plugged the wrong adapter in. is it possible to open the drive like this and "hopefully" gain access to my stuff. or is the hard drive totally fried out?

  • Thanks never thought of looking behind the logo!

Got the 1Tb version as way cheaper than any internal Tb drive just now.

  • was waiting for the phillips head screwdriver to go through the hand ....

  • @ltickett Oh, I gotcha. I misunderstood. And 200gb is a nice chunk taken from the original size, but I've heard trying to convert some externals into internals with 2 - 3tb will cause the pc to recognize only about 300-400gb without the enclosure. Just what I heard cause everyone's trying to save money. Of course though, I couldn't put a 3.5" drive in my notebook. lol
