Unfortunately when we visited Yamansu, an ore mine railway in the desert, no trains were running because the mine was waiting for empty mineral wagons from China Rail. The JS's crew kindly shunted up and down the yard specially for our benefit. Not much action but the sun shone, the sky was blue and the yard has some nice semaphore signals

  • When was this video taken?

  • @Chrisgodoflard 7th December 2009

  • @blackthorne57 Do they do still use these engines, not on the main line though.

  • @Chrisgodoflard Steam locos still work the 36 km branch line from the ore mine at Yamansu to the China Rail exchange sidings at Shankou (on the Wulumuqi-Lanzhou main line). Diesel locos are due to take over in March 2012. A couple of steam locos will be kept for shunting at the mine. (report by John Raby Sep 2011)

  • Very good of them to shunt around for you.

  • Super!

  • Shame - but at least you got some steam in your pores!
