How come he never looked behind him?

I wonder how the guy couldn't see the tiger and the bear from the corner of his eye from 0:37-0:45 and from 1:15-1:17, and then at 1:18, it was surprising that he didn't see the tiger, bear, and elephant since he was looking in the direction they were in behind him when he was putting down his camera to walk away.

Early 70's. The tiger & bear walk upright; they're dressed up humans. So we have an elephant saying "OK", & taking a picture of 2 men!
