I think it has a much deeper meaning- Notice how the ships approaching the island towards the end are strikingly similar to the virus attacking the cells? The old man has realised that humanity, in its actions on the earth, is the virus and that he is part of the problem- really bleak if you look at it like that

@deathwyvern1 The whole "end of the world scenario" was his interpretation on the home he was in, and in reality he wanted to escape (Virus) so he was going to kill himslef to escape. Really a large metaphor, and that can also be within a metaphor of what we are doing to our earth, like what Rozinasran said.
