Qayaq balance brace done with no hands, showing how valuable it is to lead with your belly (leaving your head in the water until the end) when coming up from any qayaq roll. This is part of a progression to learning to do Tallit paarlatsillugit timaannarmik, also called a no hands roll. At the beginning of the video you also see my first attempt at chest sculling, which is part of a progression to learning forward ending qayaq rolls, as well as being a useful form of support in and of itself.

  • I know this spelling is unusual, but it is intentional here. Qajaq is the generally accepted spelling when referring to Greenlandic skills, as it is the spelling used in early writings by Europeans about Greenlandic skills; qayaq is the equivalent spelling in the Canadian arctic. Thanks.

  • Such wonderful chest sculling. One day I saw this amazing person on a chest scull almost like she was in a balance brace and the effort was so minor, almost like the flame was pulled from her fire.

A Inuk once suggested when in a sculling brace it is just best to relax and slow down things down. He also said to resist the temptations of stress and then to stay calm. In sculling, he said, to go slow, methodical, and wide of stroke- then shorten that.
